Testimonials (these are real):“Claire Woolner is an inspired and inspiring teacher. I’m 30 years into comedy and her perspective and priceless support have allowed me to further develop a one-person show I thought I didn’t have time for. Now, the overwhelming seems possible. I have taken her solo show class twice and have benefitted from her audition coaching. The way she has changed my mindset toward the audience- a gift to the show rather than a threat- has been nothing less than miraculous. As a stand-up, I am feeling less defensive with crowds and more collaborative. I feel renewed as a performer and less isolated onstage. [she could double her prices easily] Avail yourself of her excellence before she’s no longer available due to Making It Big in ShowBiz!” — Maria Bamford
“I can't overstate how compelling and inspiring Claire is as a teacher. I’ve taken a lot of classes and worked with a lot of directors and learning from her was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. She has a critical eye capable of seeing the performance you already have inside of you. More importantly, she has the breadth of experience to take what you already have and build it to new heights. I can say with confidence that not only did Claire double the amount of workable material I had, but her notes and direction elevated the content tenfold. I have recommended her classes to everyone I know and will continue to do so because I really believe that she will fundamentally make you a better performer and artist.”—Will Dwyer
“Claire is a clairvoyant clown queen who creates circles of creativity, catharsis and connection. Taking Claire’s class was like putting my show in a clown blender, what an amazing blend of fun, freeing and fulfilling.” –Melinda Hill
“I loved every minute of the class, and there are a LOT of minutes - far more than we deserve for what Claire's charging. The instruction was loose enough that everyone felt free to experiment in all sorts of ways, and focused enough that the experimentation led to really interesting places. I came in with a very nebulous idea of what I wanted to develop, and left with a viable structure for a show! I have recommended this class to everyone I know with even a slight desire to perform!” —Jade Chang
“This workshop was so valuable to my process in building a solo show! Claire is an amazing teacher, and so skilled at guiding you to be vulnerable and authentically silly, drawing out what is special and unique in each performer. Her warmth, openness, and curiosity provides a foundation of safety to explore, while at the same time challenging you to go further and extend the bounds of your comfort zone. Claire taught me to step into my fear, and that fear itself is an essential tool and gift to all performers; to “touch the fire” and to show the audience what that experience is made of. 10/10 would recommend this workshop and Claire as a teacher! You will leave feeling nourished and enriched with creativity and ideas!“— Rachel Troy

"The discipline of weekly warm-ups and sharing helped me get out of my head and back to simply creating. Every artist could benefit from trying something like this occasionally. Be accountable to your peers and make something funny!”

"This workshop? It delivered more than I was expecting! Claire's safe-space setup was like a playground for trying ideas, and the warmups and techniques fit my "visual art" practice nicely. As a bonus, it awakened my inner performer and reminded me how much I love Sophie B Hawkins."

What’s so funny? A Workshop
“Art is Funny and Funny is Art.”-- Me just now.
Trying to be funny isn’t very funny.
A workshop to explore how chasing beauty and depth in your work can lead to comedy on a level that hits harder than you could have ever imagined. Find the funny through the not-so-funny and be amazed by the hilarity in truth.
Whether you are working towards a larger piece/body of work, or just want to explore the spirit of comedy in truth within your chosen medium, this workshop offers prompts, questions, conversations, and short lessons on contemporary artists that will inspire and push deep within ourselves to where the guttural laughter awaits.
There is no pressure to be, do or make anything funny–we will just explore our depths and vulnerabilities see where they lead. But my gut tells me we’re gonna find some pretty absurdly hilarious shit.
Writers, poets, musicians, performers, filmmakers in short, artists of all disciplines welcome.
